Scans of Kodachromes Result in Dark Images with Blue Casts

You scan a Kodachrome and get something like this:

Florence on Kodachrome

Cause: Because of its unique dyes and high contrast, Kodachromes present an especially difficult challenge for non-professional scanners.

Remedy: Scanning a Kodachrome Image

Comment: Even the introduction of a "Kodachrome" mode in NikonScan 3 was only partially and intermittently effective. This has improved noticeably with the latest generation of scanners (e.g. LS-5000, LS-9000).
