Scan Results in Dark Image with Low Contrast

Usually your scans result in acceptable images.  But this time your scan results in a dark image with low contrast:

Cause: Incorrect scanner exposure due to light leak.

Remedy: Mask all openings between the mount and image.  Detailed description

Comment: This is a fairly common beginner's error and is not specific to NikonScan or Nikon scanners.  A light leak misleads the scanner's autoexposure system.  A light leak can also cause severe flare.
